Asset Living’s Kayla Costa Shares Advice on #BecomingAnAsset

Understanding how to build a successful team starts with learning from those who have worked hard to develop and shape their career to become an integral part of the team. In the #BecomingAnAsset series, we ask Asset Living employees to share advice for those looking to grow personally and professionally – from turning challenges into opportunities for career development to persevering towards a promotion – our team members are full of quality advice that can help to guide anyone towards success. Today we are hearing from Kayla Costa, Marketing Manager.

What is your background and experience in and what do you do within Asset Living?

"I earned my bachelor's degree in communications from Arizona State University. I worked in sales before I started working for Asset Living. I started in the Accounts Payable Department in 2019. During my first year, I was promoted from AP to the renovations department, then to an HOA Junior Accountant while assisting in interior design projects. With consistent hard work and dedication, I made my way into the marketing department! I have been the Marketing Manager for the Phoenix Corporate Office/Southwest Locations for the last three years. I run all the social media platforms for this division, assisting in advertising, rebranding, interior design, event planning, and more!"

What piece of advice would you give to a new employee who is #BecomingAnAsset?

"Welcome and congratulations! My advice is to be open-minded, flexible, and resilient! Things are constantly changing in the industry, which may mean you have to switch communities, positions, etc. My career path started in accounting and led me to my dream position in marketing. I would not change my career path because I learned so much along the way and made incredible connections within different departments."

What drives you to be the best team member possible?

"The Golden Rule! From a young age, my mom engraved this into my brain; treat people how you want to be treated. This has helped me be a great employee and a good person overall. Helping others and being reliable also makes my heart happy."

What is your favorite memory from this year or within your career at Asset Living?

"There was a time when I had a mini-series called “Keeping Up with Kayla.” I would visit communities and make a highlight video about them. They ranged from new constructions, lease-ups and events! Although I have been blessed with countless memories here at Asset, this was a memory I will forever cherish."

What advice would you give other women who are looking to pursue opportunities in property management?

"Be confident and approachable! Every day in property management is different, so you must be prepared to deal with the unexpected. In any industry, you have to stay strong and believe in yourself! You’re dealing with one of the most significant monthly expenses people have. Although property management is very rewarding and fun, you’ll also develop a thick skin and learn a lot about critical thinking and decision-making. Women have so many superpowers. Tap into those and use them to your advantage!"

Lastly, what do you like to do outside of work in your free time?

"I enjoy new experiences, the outdoors, and spending time with friends and family! I love working out, lake days, camping, sitting by the pool, morning walks with my boyfriend and dog, concerts, and traveling. People call me a socialite because I am ALWAYS doing something."
