Asset Living’s Lauren Washington Shares Advice on #BecomingAnAsset

Understanding how to build a successful team starts with learning from those who have worked hard to develop and shape their career to become an integral part of the team. In the #BecomingAnAsset series, we ask Asset Living employees to share advice for those looking to grow personally and professionally – from turning challenges into opportunities for career development to persevering towards a promotion – our team members are full of quality advice that can help to guide anyone towards success. Today we are hearing from Lauren Washington, Junior Accountant.

What is your background and experience in and what do you do within Asset Living?

“I began my career in property management in 2010 as a leasing agent in Fort Smith, Arkansas, while juggling being a full-time college student and a single mother. In 2014, I packed up and moved to the Great State of Texas and became an Assistant Manager. In a matter of 6 months, I showed dedication and hard work, which got me promoted to Property Manager. My goal has always been to achieve my goals, and in January 2015, I surpassed everything I had set my mind to. I sat and memorized the 4350 HUD Handbook and attended as many Tax Credit classes as possible. My team exceeded the MOR and REAC Inspection, creating new windows for me. With my Accountant degree on hold, I wanted to further my career in all avenues. So, I returned to school to finish my accounting degree in 2016. I then exceeded that goal for two more years until I received my Master's. In August of 2022, I was given the opportunity to further my career with Asset Living as a Junior Accountant. As a Junior Accountant, I work under property accountants who prepare monthly financials, AP Payments, and all the daily duties of an accountant. At the start of 2023, I joined the Asset Ambassador program that helps promote Asset Livings’ core values and our brand, and I couldn't be more grateful. I am working to grow continuously every day in hopes of becoming a Controller.”

What piece of advice would you give to a new employee who is #BecomingAnAsset?

“Always strive to be your best. Work as a team. Mistakes will always happen, but it also is a lesson for continued growth. Use the mistake as an advantage. Do not be too hard on yourself. Your mistake might help someone else. Do not be afraid of it. Asset Living is about growth and helping one another. We are not just a member of the company. We are family.”

What drives you to be the best team member possible?

“Helping others exceed their goals. No matter if it is a personal goal or a work goal. I listen, I observe and then help. I like to see everyone grow in their career.”

What is your favorite memory from this year or within your career at Asset Living?

“My favorite memory of Asset Living was the introduction of the new Asset Living HQ. It was great getting to see everyone’s faces with smiles and laughter. Since most of us work remotely, we only see each other occasionally if it's a Teams meeting. There is nothing more joyful than putting a name to the face in person.”

Lastly, what do you like to do outside of work in your free time?

“Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my wife and children, creating memories that will hold something dear to me. With work and school for 8 hours, I try to spend as much time as possible with my family. Family is always the number one priority, whether it’s a movie night in the house, shopping with my teenagers, sporting events, or general conversation.”
