Asset Living’s Jennifer Vieux Shares Advice on #BecomingAnAsset

Understanding how to build a successful team starts with learning from those who have worked hard to develop and shape their career to become an integral part of the team. In the #BecomingAnAsset series, we ask Asset Living employees to share advice for those looking to grow personally and professionally – from turning challenges into opportunities for career development to persevering towards a promotion – our team members are full of quality advice that can help to guide anyone towards success. Today we are hearing from Asset Living’s Community Manager Jennifer Vieux.

What is your background and experience in and what do you do within Asset Living?

“My career began in 1992 when I accepted a job as a Leasing Consultant at a large 440-unit community.   I quickly fell in love with the industry and wanted to learn all there was to know about operating and managing a property. I was blessed to have an amazing leader who knew I wanted to learn and grow – so she mentored and taught me all there was to know. By the age of 23, I was managing my own community – a beautiful 496-unit property that I will always call my baby! I have so many fond memories from there! I managed this site for 10 years (through five owner changes) until a former boss recruited me for a Regional Operations Manager position overseeing six sites.

During this time, I was highly involved with my local apartment association and served on the board of directors for eight years. This allowed me to make wonderful connections with my peers and vendors – which led me to eventually ‘jump ship’ for a few years to work on the vendor side. In February 2015, I decided it was time to get back to where my passion was, so I joined another property management company where we managed both single-family homes and small apartment communities. In December 2020, after 49 years of living in Kansas (and during a major pandemic), I decided to make a huge life change and relocate to Arizona. This is when I discovered Asset Living! Oh, what fun it has been so far! I am currently managing my fourth community since arriving in Arizona two years ago. I have been blessed to work alongside so many talented individuals. The leadership team is amazing, and they recognize those who have a passion for the industry and allow us to really grow and shine.”

What piece of advice would you give to a new employee who is #BecomingAnAsset?

“Start each day knowing that you can make a difference. Learn all that you can. Build relationships. Move forward through each day with a PASSION to serve people. Be a mentor to your peers. Always keep the ‘can do’ attitude, even when it’s tough. Lean on your support team – we all become like family. Most importantly – make sure you LOVE what you do...and keep smiling!”

What drives you to be the best team member possible?

“As I mentioned earlier, I had an amazing mentor who truly cared about my success. This had a huge impact on me. I love being a fearless leader to my team and I always say that I am training them to take my job one day. I lead with compassion, both for my employees and my tenants. Seeing them succeed just warms my heart!”

What is your favorite memory from this year or within your career at Asset Living?

“If I had to choose just one, a moment that made me incredibly proud was winning an award at the 2021 Asset Living Managers Conference. I was completely caught by surprise! I remember watching the virtual meeting on my computer when suddenly, I saw my boss appear on the screen. She was doing this silly skit, dressed in safari clothing. I was giggling right along and then BOOM – there was my face! I had managed a very challenging site when I first arrived in Arizona. Honestly, it’s the only time I’ve truly almost wanted to give up and walk away. However, I worked through the kinks, and with a lot of perseverance and blood, sweat, and tears, I positioned the property in the perfect spot for the owners to sell. Knowing that my hard work didn’t go unnoticed made all the challenging moments I faced worth it. Team Asset had faith in me, supported me through the challenges, and then recognized me for a job well done. This has meant so much.”

Lastly, what do you like to do outside of work in your free time?

“I am a huge fan of the outdoors, so you’ll often see me out and about exploring. Whether it’s kayaking down the river, hiking up the side of a mountain, or off-roading in my Jeep – I'm always up for a fun adventure. Growing up in Kansas, I am a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan and rarely miss a game. I also love to travel and plan to start marking some destinations off my travel bucket list in 2023!”
