Asset Living’s Ryan DeVeau Shares Advice on #BecomingAnAsset

Understanding how to build a successful team starts with learning from those who have worked hard to develop and shape their career to become an integral part of the team. In the #BecomingAnAsset series, we ask Asset Living employees to share advice for those looking to grow personally and professionally—from turning challenges into opportunities for career development to persevering towards a promotion—our team members are full of quality advice that can help to guide anyone towards success. Today we are hearing from Ryan DeVeau, Regional Lease-Up Specialist.

What is your background and experience in and what do you do within Asset Living?

“I started my career with Asset Living in 2016. I was fresh out of college and unsure about what I wanted to do with my Advertising degree. During my job search, I came across an open Leasing Manager position with Asset, and the rest is history. To date, I have worked in Student Housing, Commercial Real Estate, Multi-Family, and now Student New Development. Presently, I am a Regional Lease-Up Specialist in our New Development department. I have the fortune of working with some of the most talented leasing teams in the industry, and our chief objective is to lease up a portfolio of new construction communities across the nation.”

What piece of advice would you give to a new employee who is #BecomingAnAsset?

“I recommend involving yourself as much as possible. I have learned that—in any industry—the most successful people are the ones who are the most plugged in. As someone who leads teams from as far north as Buffalo, New York, to as far south as Tampa, Florida, my number one piece of advice to each team member is to cultivate and maintain as many relationships in the industry as possible. When I reflect on my time in housing, there are very few people whom I have worked with that I no longer keep in touch with. The housing industry is a big, yet small world. Utilizing the resource that is the talented minds within Asset’s network is a recipe for success. Never be afraid to ask for advice or help.”

What drives you to be the best team member possible?

“My main motivator continues to be the people I can help impact. On a macro level, I approach every day by seeking out ways to support my teams. My number one priority is making sure that they have every resource available to them to do their jobs efficiently and effectively. On a micro level, the happiness of each resident is always at the forefront of my mind. The college years are some of the most formative years in a person’s life, and the ability to contribute to those years in a meaningful way, for so many people, is extremely motivating.”

What is your favorite memory from this year or within your career at Asset Living?

“This is my first year in a regional role. It is hard to pin down a “favorite” memory, but each one that comes to mind involves every one of my teams. I get so excited to see the moment when it “clicks” for a new team member. For each of the site-level Lease Up Specialists I have worked with this year, being able to celebrate wins and overcome losses together has been a bonding and growth experience I will carry with me throughout my career.”

Lastly, what do you like to do outside of work in your free time?

“Traveling is my favorite thing to do. I love exploring new places, trying new foods, and then immediately checking Zillow to see if I should move to wherever I am visiting. When I am at home, I love spending time with my boyfriend, exploring the outdoors, and loving on my golden retriever.”
