Asset Living Executive Vice President of Multi-Family Operations, Bonnie Smetzer, was recently inducted into the 2023 National Apartment Association's Board of Directors (NAA). Smetzer has served on the NAA Board of Directors since 2016, representing Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The National Apartment Association is a leading voice for the rental housing industry and has over 95,000 members who are committed to serving 141 states with local and global affiliates. In this blog, Bonnie Smetzer shares what this new role means to her and what she is looking forward to most in 2023.

What are you most looking forward to about this new role within NAA?

“I was excited to be elected again for another two-year term (this year and next year). In this role, I enjoy being engaged on various committees and being part of the decisions made by the NAA Board of Directors. This year, I will serve for the first time on the budget and finance committee, and will also serve again on the legislative committee, which I have been a part of since 2017. I most look forward to attending the NAA Advocate Conference in Washington, D.C. This year we will be meeting with elected officials to discuss the need to make it easier to build more apartments to house our growing population.”

Do you have any plans or goals you would like to achieve in this new role?

“Yes! Rent control legislation is occurring across the country and my plans are to continue to be involved in advocacy efforts to fight rent control, as these misguided policies discourage apartment development at a time when we need to build more apartments.”

How does the NAA mission and vision align with Asset Living's mission and vision in your eyes?

“NAA is a strong advocate for the rental housing industry. At Asset Living, we believe everyone deserves a place to call home. I see these missions as aligned and look forward to continuing to work advocating on behalf of the apartment industry to make it easier for apartment developers to build more apartments.”
