Career Insights from Asset Living Senior Vice President Scott Orphan

Asset Living’s Scott Orphan has worked in property management for over 20 years. Orphan started his career as a community assistant and later became the Vice President of Management Services. He then joined Asset Living over four years ago where he has served as a Senior Vice President based in Austin, TX. In this blog, Orphan shares his past career highlights, favorite projects, and lessons learned along the way.

Tell us what have the highlights been in your career with Asset Living?

“Being in a leadership position has allowed me to train, develop, and mentor so many talented individuals. Helping people meet their professional goals and grow as leaders is something I consider one of my most rewarding accomplishments.  I was very fortunate at the beginning of my career to be surrounded by so many great people that took the time to invest in me, provide guidance and growth opportunities, and ultimately help develop me into the leader I am today. It’s such a privilege to be able to pay that forward for the next generation of leaders, and Asset Living’s tremendous growth has provided incredible opportunities for so many ready for that advancement.”

I’m sure you have a favorite project you’ve worked on – tell us about some of your greatest work memories or what has been the most rewarding part of your career overall?

“It’s always fun and exciting to participate in decisions regarding the transformation of living and amenity spaces when a property undertakes larger capital improvements.  When you’re able to create a positive impact on the resident experience while meeting a client’s goals and expectations everyone benefits.

I also enjoy sitting with other co-workers on our vendor innovation panel to pilot and provide feedback on new vendor opportunities.  I’m passionate about utilizing technology to expand productivity and solve problems, and anything we can do to increase efficiency is great for our employees and the organization.”

What has been the best career advice or lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?

“Don’t be afraid to venture outside of your comfort zone. Whether it’s moving to a new city, volunteering for a difficult task, or sitting on a committee, these things provide valuable experiences for the next opportunity. Also, stay organized, practice strong verbal and written communication, deliver on your promises, and never be afraid to ask for help!”

Lastly, which of our four-core values at Asset Living – drive, honesty, impact and family – resonates most with you personally and/or professionally?

“The core value that resonates with me the most is honesty.  Honest communication, delivered in a way where words are followed through with action, creates trust and dependability which is key to building and maintaining relationships. Being honest, even when falling short of expectations or in times of failure, promotes openness, helps maintain credibility, and can even turn challenging situations into opportunities.”
