Career Insights from Covenant House’s Chief Development Officer Felicia Broussard

To celebrate Woman’s History Month, Asset Living connected with their impact partner, specifically the Chief Development Officer at Covenant House, Felicia Broussard. Broussard shared her career insights from working in the nonprofit sector and from her time spent at Covenant House over the past six years in this special edition of the Leadership Circle Series. Read more about Broussard’s motivation for pursuing a career at Covenant House below and how – all year round – the organization serves as a haven for young women looking to make a change in their life.

Tell us a little about your background and how you got your start at Covenant House?

“Prior to my work in the non-profit sector, I served as a Student Affairs Director at North Carolina State University. My background in higher education prepared me to counsel, educate and support college students as they navigated the academic, social, and financial challenges of this pivotal time. Completion of their degree and a successful transition into their career were the goals.  While at the university, I also led student mission trips into some of the most impoverished and destitute areas in our country to serve those in need. These leadership and service-learning trips also shaped my understanding of the world and the purposes God had for my own life. When I moved to Houston in 2012, I decided to continue my career with an organization I volunteered with in North Carolina Ronald McDonald House.  This afforded me the opportunity to not only serve children and their families but to assist in a different manner advancing the organization through revenue-generating initiatives. In 2017, I was presented with the opportunity to serve at Covenant House Texas. This opened the door to returning to serving college-aged young adults while continuing in fundraising and donor stewardship.  Every day, I work with and for the most vulnerable in Houston, helping to provide life-changing respite and support to 18-24-year-old youth who are overcoming homelessness.”

What was it about the cause that motivated you to pursue a career with the organization?

“What I like most about the work I do at Covenant House Texas is that this is a faith-based organization, where the example of the Lord's unconditional love for others is at the core of our mission.”

As we celebrate all women this month, what advice or information would you share about the resources Covenant House provides for those who are looking to make a change in their life?

“I encourage any young person who is experiencing homelessness or escaping human trafficking to find respite at Covenant House Texas. It is a unique haven the only place in Houston that exclusively serves this age demographic and provides a complete continuum of care.  Young women (as well as men) who come to our doors receive shelter and all their basic needs; but they also have access to physical and mental health care, education and job services, life skills training, and faith-based opportunities.  As residents of Covenant House Texas, young people have a chance to heal from past trauma and build upon their strengths to become healthy, productive, and permanently housed young adults.  For young women who come to us with babies and toddlers, we offer them a loving place to live together with their child(ren) as they receive parenting guidance and support. Youth can remain at Covenant House Texas for 18-24 months, allowing them to develop into physically, mentally, and economically strong individuals with a promising independent future. My advice is to come and engage in all the potentially life-changing opportunities available at Covenant House Texas!”

If others want to get involved, how can someone give back to support the mission at Covenant House?

There are several ways others can join Covenant House Texas in its mission.  Volunteers can present leadership or financial workshops, provide a catered meal or activity, or coordinate a donation drive for essential items. Many professionals also join us for our signature fundraisers, including our annual Sleep Outs, Guts + Glory Corporate Obstacle Challenge, and Night of Broadway Stars events. Our mission is sustained through generous donations and grants from individuals, foundations, and corporations; gifts at any level are appreciated and directly support our youth programs and services.”

What advice would you give other young women who are looking to pursue opportunities to give back to their communities?

“Follow your heart, ask God to lead you, and use your gifts to ensure the betterment of others.  There is no one way or one place to serve your community; everyone has something to contribute. As you do so, you will be enhancing our society, and you will be blessed abundantly in return. There are two scriptures that provide great advice for serving and giving back Acts 20:35 and Matthew 5:16. I cannot tell you how humbled and honored I am to have this unexpected opportunity to reflect on my faith, passion, and career. I am so grateful and hope this serves to encourage others as well.”
