Winter is coming! This means preparing for snow, avoiding frozen pipes and managing the colder temperatures by following these tips to best prepare for winter. But don’t worry – the Asset Living team of experts has you covered with some helpful advice
1.) Start by preparing the inside of your apartment.
- Turn your ceiling fans at a low speed and put them in reverse. This will circulate warm air in your apartment.
- If your apartment has a fireplace or chimney, make sure to inspect it and/or have it cleaned before use.
- Stock up on nonperishables to keep in your pantry. You should have food to last you a few days in case you are unable to leave your home due to a winter storm.
2.) Don’t forget about your outdoor spaces.
- Bring potted plants in from outside of your apartment to keep them from freezing.
- Bring in any outdoor furniture, rugs, or decorations before heavy snowfall to avoid damage.
3.) Take these right precautions to prevent frozen pipes.
- Make sure you do not turn off the AC in your unit, even if you are going out of town for the holidays.
- Keep the cabinets under the kitchen sink open so warm air can circulate around the pipes.
- If the temperature drops below 20 degrees, keep faucets running slowly. This can help to prevent lines from freezing.
- If you suspect a pipe has frozen over, call your leasing office immediately.
4.) Don’t let some ice ruin your day.
- Keep an ice scraper in your car to help clear any snow or ice from your windshield.
- Have a boot tray at the front door to put your snow-covered shoes on once inside.
5.) Always have an emergency kit ready. Some items to include for winter:
- Flashlights
- Hand/Foot Warmers
- Batteries
- AM Radio
- Nonperishables
- Basic First Aid Supplies
