Understanding how to build a successful team starts with learning from those who have worked hard to develop and shape their career to become an integral part of the team. In the #BecomingAnAsset series, we ask Asset Living employees to share advice for those looking to grow personally and professionally – from turning challenges into opportunities for career development to persevering towards a promotion – our team members are full of quality advice that can help to guide anyone towards success. Today we are hearing from Tiyana Mackey, Community Manager.
What is your background and experience in and what do you do within Asset Living?
“I have six years of experience in the housing industry, jump-starting my career in 2018. My experience mostly entails student living, but I have also had the pleasure of working on the multi-family side of Asset Living. By experiencing both sides of the industry, I feel I have a versatile approach to my style of managing, which makes it much easier to connect with others coming from different backgrounds. Currently, I am the Community Manager of Aspen Heights, Sam Houston. My role involves managing a team of high-spirited and goal-oriented team members, working together to perform daily operations and supersede anticipated leasing goals. Working with Asset has taught me various skills that I utilize in my daily workflow.”
What piece of advice would you give to a new employee who is #BecomingAnAsset?
“Utilize your resources and connect! While working for Asset Living, I have been exposed to many tools and resources that have impacted my success within my role. Everyone must start somewhere, and I truly feel that Asset Living is filled with so many like-minded individuals eager to play a part in other team members’ success! I have connected with many people within the company who have become key players in my ability to complete tasks efficiently and effectively. The best advice I can give someone #BecomingAnAsset is to invest in your professional growth by connecting with colleagues and taking advantage of any training opportunities presented!”
What drives you to be the best team member possible?
“First and foremost, I love connecting with people and making a difference in someone’s life. I am passionate about inspiring, influencing, training, and connecting with others! In addition to having a people spirit, I hope to conduct this level of connection on a higher level across multiple horizons. I believe that if I make a large impact on my current site, I am getting closer to having the chance to do this over multiple sites and people! Therefore, daily, I strive to improve, learn, and engage with those around me to learn about other perspectives and needs within the workplace. Someone once told me that “you can’t experience the rain without going through the mud,” so I believe that if you want success, you must put your best foot forward daily! Keeping that thought in mind, I come to work each day with a goal-oriented mindset to accomplish the professional growth that I desire in the future, which in return makes me work harder.”
What is your favorite memory from this year or within your career at Asset Living?
“2023 Community Manager Training Conference! WOW, this was the experience of a lifetime. I was able to engage with other Asset CM’s, learn different styles of management, receive training on platforms that I utilize within my role daily, and learn more about the tools and resources in place within the company. I gained so many new skills that I was able to bring back and implement with my team. Following the conference, I also felt more connected with the company that I work for and the assets that it consists of! Lastly, I participated in a deep dive segment of Asset Living’s core values and quickly realized how aligned those values are with my personal life, which made my love for the company grow!”
Lastly, what do you like to do outside of work in your free time?
“Outside of work, I love to do make-up! I find it super therapeutic and a way to express my creativity.! I also love to be surrounded by the comfort of family, friends, and my pup.! Lastly – I love going on random Target shopping sprees with no planned purchases and leaving with a bunch of cool new gadgets!”
